About Us |
|
Cardiac Kids is a volunteer group established in 2000 to raise much-needed funds for children who are suffering from congenital heart disease. 1 in 100 Canadian children are born with a congenital heart defect and more than half need surgery to survive. More than half of the patients who require surgery are under one year old, and almost a quarter are less than a month old. Congenital Heart Defects or CHDs are the most common birth defect.
Funds raised by Cardiac Kids are used to support the children and staff of the cardiology ward at The Hospital for Sick Children. |

Initiatives |
Cardiac Kids has touched many lives since its inception. To boost the morale of the children and their families, Cardiac Kids has hosted approximately 3,000 children from across Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada at various sporting and social events. In addition, some of the major initiatives that Cardiac Kids supports include:
Title sponsor for the annual Labatt Family Heart Centre Family Conference
This conference brings children, their families and health professionals together to share information and experiences about heart disease in children. Its goal is to enhance parent and family emotional well being through knowledge exchange, experiential sharing and the development of informal support systems. Conference activities include:
Seminars for parents on a variety of topics including: Quality of life for children with CHD and their siblings, managing surgical pain in children, panel discussions, problem based round table discussion groups, school challenges, development challenges, diet challenges, etc.
Care and activities for kids including: performances by children's entertainers, crafts, panel discussions, etc.
Support Camp Oki through $1,000,000 donation
Camp Oki is Canada's first (and only) summer camp for children with congenital heart disease. Camp Oki started as a long weekend program but thanks to support from Cardiac Kids and our partner the Firkin Group of pubs, it has grown rapidly to a one-week program in Muskoka free to campers and their families.
Camp Oki provides a safe and memorable recreational opportunity for children who are often shut out of mainstream summer camping programs because of misinformation and lack of confidence on the part of camps, parents and patients.
Title sponsor for the annual SickKids CDIS Symposium
In line with the SickKids vision “Healthier Children. A Better World.” derived the conception of the first Cardiac Diagnostic Interventional Symposium. Over 40 nurses, physicians and allied healthcare professionals attend this event, which takes place at the SickKids CDIU.
Thy symposium focused on nursing and allied healthcare professional education. Objectives included: outlining new and emerging approaches to diagnostic and management in cardiac catheterization care; perspectives of innovation, research and education; networking and dialogue around team building and interdisciplinary collaboration within the cardiac catheterization unit and; review of best practices in the transition of care to adult centres.
Supporting of SickKids Nursing Week on the Cardiology Ward
Support of nursing week allows Cardiac Kids to give back to the nurses with fun activities and delicious snacks. We know how important nurses are to care of children with CHD; this is our way of saying thank you.
Sponsor of Annual 4D Ronald McDonald House Dinner
The annual 4D Ronald McDonald House Dinner was established by a team of Labatt Family Heart Centre nurses. This event accomplishes both of Cardiac Kids main goals in giving back to families and to nurses. Each year to celebrate heart month in February, 30 nurses and staff members from the cardiology ward at SickKids plan, cook and serve dinner to over 80 families of terminally ill children who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
