Big Hearts helping Little Hearts In Support of SickKids Foundation

Cardiac Kids is a volunteer group established in 2000 to raise funds for children who are suffering from congenital heart disease. One in 100 Canadian children are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) and more than half need surgery to survive. More than half of the patients who require surgery are under one year old, and almost a quarter are less than a month old. Congenital Heart Defects are the most common birth defect.

Funds raised by Cardiac Kids are used to support the children and staff of the cardiology ward at The Hospital for Sick Children through two main areas of focus:

Emotional health and well being of children and families affected by CHD

Through research doctors have developed many tools and techniques to help children with CHD to survive and liver longer lives. Cardiac Kids recognizes that care doesn't end once the child leaves the hospital and that families affected by CHD face many challenges. We remain committed to supporting children and families by providing fun and social opportunities, connecting families experiencing similar challenges, and funding educational events for parents.

Pediatric cardiology nursing

Cardiac Kids is a strong supporter of pediatric cardiology nursing education, with the aim of providing the best possible care for children who must undergo cardiac treatment. To that end, each year scholarships and conference funding are provided to Cardiac Program nurses to maintain their position at the leading edge of pediatric cardiology nursing.

Big Hearts Helping Little Hearts! It has been an incredible year for Cardiac Kids, and just in time for the holidays due to the generous support of Spin Master and one of our major donors The Cameron Family, in honor of their daughter, Chrissie Cameron-Boshart, Cardia Kids was able to provide The Hospital for Sick Children with the hottest Christmas toys. Cardia Kids’ objective was to provide the families and more specifically the children at the Hospital for Sick Children with this year’s number one toys so that they can feel the holiday spirit like any other child. Cardiac Kids will continue striving to provide experiences and new initiatives for families and children who are affected by congenital heart diseases and the only way that this is possible is with the outstanding contributions of companies like Spin Master and families like the Cameron’s. The Mighty O! This children's book is the story of Owen Veloso who was born with a congenital heart defect and the challenges he and his family have overcome.   Authored by Dr. Emis Akbari and illustrated by Arzu Abbasova, 100% of the proceeds from the book support The Labatt Family Cardiac Centre  at the Hospital for Sick Children and  Make-A-Wish Foundation Canada.  Owen received his wish of being a fireman from Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2012.
